Born in London in 1913, Leonard Rosoman studied at Durham University, the Royal Academy Schools (1935–36) and the Central School of Arts and Crafts (1937–38). He served in the Second World War, becoming an Official War Artist in 1944, painting scenes ofthe Pacific on board an aircraft carrier. In 1947 Rosoman began teaching at Camberwell School of Art, before moving to Edinburgh in 1948 to teach at the College of Art. From 1956 he taught at the Royal College of Art, London. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1960 and a full Academician in 1970. Rosoman was awarded an OBE in 1981. In 2003, his 90th birthday was celebrated with an exhibition at the Fine Art Society, London.
