Sine Mackinnon was born in Newcastle, County Down, Northern Ireland. She studied at the Slade School in London (1918-20 and 1921-24) where she was taught by Henry Tonks. Aftewards, she moved to Paris and attended classes at the École des Beaux Arts where she met leading French painters including Henri Matisse and Raoul Dufy. She had two exhibitions in Paris and continued to work between Paris and London. Mackinnon’s first British solo show was held at the Goupil Gallery in London (1928). In 1928 she married the painter, Rupert Granville-Fordham. A year later Mackinnon held a joint exhibition with Stephen Bone at the Fine Art Society, London, exhibiting paintings of Connemara.
