Explore: Benedetto, the Younger Gennari

(1633 - 1715)

Benedetto Gennari, Bolognese painter of history and portraits, was a pupil of the artist Guercino. In 1674 he arrived in London, where he was commissioned to paint altarpieces for the Queen in her Roman Catholic chapels at Whitehall and in St James’s Palace. In 1688 Gennari followed James II to St Germain near Paris after the latter’s deposition from the English throne, and continued in royal service until 1692 when he returned to Bologna.
