Explore: Simon Faithfull

(1966 - )

Simon Faithfull was born near Reading and studied at Central St Martin’s (1986–89) and Reading University (1994–96). An artist who explores ideas – some plausible, some hypothetical, his works include Shy Dance-Floor (2015) a 1970s-style disco in a pedestrian underpass in Hagen, Germany, that vanishes on entry; and Fake Moon (2008), an illuminated helium balloon that recreated the arc of a star across an English night sky. Investigating aspects of different types of journeys through film and video is a central strand of Faithfull’s practice. These include Orbital#2:Berlin (2020), a mandala-like video composition of concentric circles exploring Berlin; and videos, photographs and drawings produced while travelling as resident artist with the British Antarctic Survey to the Halley Research Station in 2004. Exhibiting his work internationally, Faithfull has also taught widely in the UK and Europe and since 2003 is Reader (Associate Professor) at the Slade School of Fine Art, London.
