Julia Margaret Cameron was born in Calcutta, the daughter of an official of the East India Company. She married a judge, Charles Hay Cameron, and moved to Ceylon, where the couple purchased several plantations. Ten years later they moved to Dimbola Lodge on the Isle of Wight. At 48, Julia was given a camera. She took photography lessons from David Wilkie Wynfield, becoming a successful photographer, although her use of a deliberately blurred effect was criticised. Her subjects included allegories of religious or literary texts and celebrities, accessed through her sister Sarah Prinsep (who, with husband Thoby, was at the centre of the Little Holland House artistic circle). In 1875, the Camerons returned to Ceylon, where Julia died aged 63.
