This pair of prints by Anya Gallaccio consists of 'Black Ice', an etching, and 'White Ice', a screenprint on mirror acrylic sprinkled with glitter. They were originally commissioned by and printed at Dundee Contemporary Arts in 2002. Both images were scanned from original photographs taken by Gallaccio. As the titles suggest, the images convey the different textures and states of frozen icy surfaces. Contrasts between light and dark in each print create semi-abstract patterns that evoke the beauty of ice, and its inherent dangerous fragility.

Drawing upon aspects of nature as subject matter for her art is a common practice of Gallaccio’s. She is best known for creating installations and sculptures made of natural or temporary materials such as flowers, food and fruit. Gallaccio is interested in organic materials that eventually deteriorate over time, enabling her to explore ideas linked to decay, time and metamorphosis.
