One of two works by Colin Molyneux in the Government Art Collection, Winter near Ystradfellte, Brecon Beacons uses the medium black and white photography to its full advantage in this distant view of a snowy Welsh landscape. Resembling a charcoal drawing in its use of stark line, the white hillside is bisected by a series of black lanes and pathways. The visual effect is almost as if a skier has zigzagged down the hill, their tracks leaving a dark impression in the snow. Our eyes are drawn to the centre of the composition where all the tracks converge and where farm buildings nestle beneath dark trees.

Ystradfellte is a small village in the Fforest Fawr area of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales, a striking landscape of hills, waterfalls and caves, popular with tourists.
