Mary Farmer studied painting at Beckenham School of Art from 1958 to 1961. She exhibited her work widely in the UK and abroad and in 1981 she was appointed a tutor in textiles at the Royal College of Art (RCA). Under her supervision the textiles department became part of the painting school, and eventually gained its independence as a discipline in 1989. She was elected a Member of Court at the RCA in 1987, and awarded a Fellowship there the following year. She continued as Director of the MA Tapestry course until 1995. She has received many commissions from public and private organisations in her career, ranging from the British Embassy in Paris, to Channel Four Television. Examples of her work are held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the University of East Anglia Collection of Abstract and Constructivist Art, Norwich.
