The iconic standing stones of the ancient British landmark, Stonehenge, stand out against a brightly coloured evening sky in Jeremy Deller’s screenprint, Untitled. In 2012, he produced Sacrilege, an inflatable, life-sized replica of the prehistoric monument which toured around the country during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The installation also featured in the film English Magic, produced as part of Deller’s exhibition when he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 2013. 

Deller is not an artist in the traditional sense. He instigates and co-ordinates a broad range of projects, including orchestrated events, films and publications, acting as both director and producer. He is interested in making socially and politically charged works such as Unconvention (1999), an exhibition and series of performances and talks based on historical events, activities and artworks as referenced in the lyrics of the band Manic Street Preachers. Other major projects include The Battle of Orgreave (2001), a mass re-enactment and film based on the 1984 miners’ strike, the year-long bitter industrial dispute in Britain; and Memory Bucket (2003), a film documenting the Waco siege in Texas in 1993. Performance, participation and collaboration are central to much of his work. As he explains, ‘A good collaboration is like going on a long journey without a map, never knowing quite where you will end up’. 

Jeremy Deller was born in London. He studied art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art before completing an MA at the University of Sussex. Solo projects include 'After The Goldrush', a guidebook and treasure hunt around California, commissioned by the Wattis Institute, San Francisco (2002); and 'This is US', a CD produced with the Centre for Curatorial Studies (2003). 'Folk Archive', a collaborative project with Alan Kane, was exhibited in Tate Britain’s touring exhibition 'Intelligence. Folk Archive: Contemporary Popular Art From The UK' (2000). Deller won the Turner Prize in 2007; and in 2013, represented Britain at the Venice Biennale with 'English Magic', a show that toured the UK in 2014. Recent projects include '24-Hour-Rockshow' at the Old Student House, Helsinki (2015); and 'Iggy Pop Life Class', a drawing class with the acclaimed American rock artist as model at the New York Academy of Art in early 2016, the results of which were exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum that autumn.
