Post match is a selection of 20 works from a collection of over 800, made from found cigarette packets from across the world. A simple rip and fold transform these everyday objects into a sculptural doodle that replicate the design of football shirts. A universal image, the intersection of tobacco products and sports is one that has changed over time. The works are also a testament to the artist’s life-long obsession with graphic design and consumerism, referenced and subverted in many of his works. For this selection, Fitzmaurice has selected product brands that play on their destination for the Government Art Collection.

Fitzmaurice’s book Post Match (2009) features 150 pieces from the series, commissioned by Locus+.

Born in Newport, Leo Fitzmaurice lives and works in Merseyside. After studying painting at Leicester Polytechnic, Liverpool Polytechnic and Manchester Metropolitan University, he emerged in the mid-1990s as the prize winner of the Northern Young Contemporaries (1993) and with the inclusion of his work in the Arts Council England touring show of new purchases (1995). In 2004, Fitzmaurice was invited by the British Council to take part in the Artist Links residency at Vitamin Creative Space, Guangzhou, China. He was the recipient of the fifth Northern Art Prize in 2012. He has exhibited extensively in the UK and internationally, with selected solo exhibitions at Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2007); Frieze London Sculpture Park (2015);The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (2018); and Humber Street Gallery, Hull (2020).
