Jan Christiaensz Micker was born and died in Amsterdam, but few details of his life are known. He is thought to have painted mostly landscapes and religious subjects. Among his known works are Old Testament scenes and landscapes of his native country. His painting of the ‘Martyrdom of St Laurence’ belongs to the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. Other works by Micker can be found in various Dutch collections; the Amsterdam Historical Museum owns an innovative bird’s-eye view of the city, in which shadows are cast over the streets and canals by unseen clouds. His brother Barent Micker was also a painter.
