Stephen McKenna was born in London and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art (1959-1964). From 1963 he taught for ten years at several English art colleges. His first solo exhibition was held in Frankfurt in 1964 after which he continued to exhibit his work in solo and group shows around the world. In 1997 he curated ‘Pursuit of Painting’, an exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art and in 2001 he was elected to the Royal Hibernian Academy. Since the early 1970s McKenna has lived for periods of time in Ireland, Germany, Belgium, Italy and the UK.
