James Barret was the son of the landscape and topographical painter George Barret Senior. James painted in the style of his father, who in turn had been influenced by Richard Wilson and George Lambert. Specialising in landscapes and topographical paintings, James exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1785 to 1819. He inherited the position of Master Painter at Chelsea Hospital in London from his father.
