Gennaro d'Amato was magazine illustrator, who specialised in wash drawings. Between 1894 and 1901 he worked for ‘The Illustrated London News’, as well as for ‘The Graphic’ and the French publication ‘L'Illustration’. In 1894, his profession took him to Russia, then to Crete in 1896 and to Rome in 1901. His wash drawing of 'The Assassination of the King of Monza' was published in ‘The Illustrated London News’ in 1900. Most of his work was concerned with important events in the lives of the crowned heads of Europe. Examples of his work are in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
