  • About the artist
Alan Reynolds was born in Newmarket, Suffolk. He studied at Woolwich Polytechnic School of Art (1948–52) and at the Royal College of Art (1952–53). Solo shows were held in London (1952, 1954) and in 1955, he was awarded a painting prize at the Giovanni Pittori exhibition in Rome. Up to the early 1960s, Reynolds taught at Central and St Martin’s Schools of Art. His early works focused on landscapes often distinguished by bold geometric compositions. From 1958, his interests shifted to abstraction, leading to painting and constructions. Retrospectives were held in London in 1991 and 2001, and at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge in 2003.
