    A fishing boat battles through rough seas off the coast of Yarmouth, in Norfolk, in this painting by James Meadows senior. It is a subject Meadows painted frequently. Another of his works titled ‘Fishing off the Coast in Rough Waters Fishing off the Coast in Rough Waters’, was sold through Bonhams & Butterfields, California, in 2006; while ‘Fishing Boats in Choppy Sea off Coast’ was sold through David Duggleby Ltd., Scarborough, in 2007. This painting and a ‘Seascape’ by Meadows at Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool may be the only examples of his work in public collections. However, numerous paintings by Meadows are privately owned.

  • About the artist
    Little is known of the artist James Meadows senior. He exhibited 21 works at the Royal Academy, 14 at the British Institution and 18 at the Society of British Artists, all in London. Meadows lived at addresses in east London throughout his career. The British Museum holds a sketchbook by the artist, which includes sketches of landscapes, cottages, cloud studies, figure studies, farm animals and a view of Kirby Hall in Essex. Meadows had several sons, who followed in his footsteps, painting marine and coastal subjects. They include Arthur Joseph Meadows (1843-1907), James Edwin L. Meadows (c.1828-1888), William Meadows, (active 1870-1895) and Frances Meadows.
