A John Morgan, described as 'alderman of St. Ewin's ward, in the city of Bristol' was living at Burfield House in Westbury, Bristol (now the main building of Redmaids' School), at the time this work was painted, but died the following year. It has not been established whether he was the sitter for this portrait.
Moses Haughton junior was the nephew of a miniature painter of the same name. He was a pupil of the great sporting painter George Stubbs and an associate of the Swiss artist Henry Fuseli (Heinrich Füssli).
