A young woman is seated in a somewhat ostentatious chair, which is upholstered in red fabric. She demurely diverts her eyes from the viewer. She wears a black dress, with a white lace decoration at the neckline, and a stole trimmed with brown fur. She has a gold bracelet on her right wrist and her hair is tied up in a simple, neat style at the nape of her neck.
The hair style and the design of the dress worn by the woman suggest that this portrait dates from the early 19th century. Neither the sitter nor the artist of the work have been identified, but a faint Russian inscription on the back of the painting may be an indication that both are Russian.
