David Tremlett was commissioned by the Government Art Collection, on behalf of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, to produce a wall drawing for the new British Embassy in Berlin. This is his study for the drawing, which covers the entire back wall of the Embassy's Wintergarden. Tremlett completed the drawing over two weeks in September 2000, aided by a team of eight assistants. He applied pastel to the plaster wall by hand and then varnished it, producing a soft, powdery finish. The design is closely related to the architectural space around it. Tremlett has travelled extensively, observing and recording details of what he has seen. The warm, intense colours of this work were partly informed by his visits to India and Africa.
