  • About the artist
Sir Howard Hodgkin’s art teacher at school, Wilfred Blunt, introduced him to Indian painting which, with the work of Henri Matisse, has been a major source of inspiration. In 1949, Hodgkin studied briefly at Camberwell School of Art and then, from 1950-1954, at the Bath Academy, Corsham, in Wiltshire. A trustee of both the National and Tate Galleries, he was awarded the CBE in 1977 and knighted in 1992. Hodgkin has exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally. He exhibited in the First India Triennale in 1968, represented Britain at the 1984 Venice Biennial, and was awarded the Turner Prize in 1985. In 2000 Hodgkin designed a mural for the new British Council building in New Delhi. His work is in public collections worldwide.
