Pastel lines of pink, green and mauve run across a circular panel in relief. The mesh of diagonal lines contrast with vertical lines that separate each relief section of the panel. The crossing lines suggest an infinite range of connotations: are we looking through the mesh of metal grillwork on an industrial pylon; or through dense foliage of plant stalks?

Although this work was painted in the 1980s, its pure abstraction and clean forms suggest an affinity with the Constructivist art movement that emerged in the early 1920s, and had an enduring effect on avant-garde art developments in Europe. Today ‘constructivism’ is an art term that is used more broadly to describe works of art composed of geometric forms that are literally constructed from precise shapes and lines. The work of certain late twentieth century artists including Mary Martin and Victor Pasmore, was particularly associated with this type of abstract art.

  • About the artist
Natalie Dower was born in 1931 in London and studied at St Martin’s, Camberwell and the Slade schools (1948-1954). She was at Camberwell in the early 1950s when Euston Road School realism was pre-dominant. Dower however was interested in Constructivism and developed her own particular form of Systems painting. She has worked to this theme ever since. Dower's first solo show was at the Polytechnic of Central London (1979). Solo exhibitions in the 1980s and 1990s include the Air Gallery and Curwen Gallery; group exhibitions include the Hayward Annual and the Countervail exhibitions with Jean Spencer. Dower's work is in public and private collections including the Arts Council of Great Britain and the Mondrian Museum in Amersfoort, Holland.
