Landscape painter Frederick William Hulme was born in Swinton, Yorkshire. His mother was a painter on porcelain and was responsible for his earliest training. He exhibited at the Birmingham Academy, Royal Academy, British Institution and Royal Manchester Institution. In 1844 he moved to London, where he found employment as a draughtsman illustrating magazines and books. However, he specialised in painting views of Surrey and Wales, and made frequent visits to Betws-y-coed in Carnarvonshire. Hulme also taught art and in 1850 his Series of Drawing Copies on Landscape Subjects for Use of Schools was published. He married and had one son, Frederick Edward Hulme, who became an artist and naturalist. He died at his home in Kensington, aged 68.
