The Beechwood

  • About the work

By placing trees and figures at varying distances in this painting, the artist draws the spectator into the scene, across the bridge over the stream, and into the heart of the beechwood. The rich colours and painstaking clarity of detail give this painting an almost unreal, mysterious and magical quality, calling to mind the glowing works of the Pre-Raphaelites and fairy tale illustrations. It comes therefore as no surprise to learn that the artist worked as an illustrator and as a miniature painter.
