A leading British modern artist, Victor Pasmore studied at the Central School of Art and first exhibited with the London Group in 1930. He co-founded the Euston Road School in 1937, an artists’ group concerned with figurative depictions of everyday life, an approach that counteracted the Surrealism and Constructivism. Pasmore taught at Camberwell School of Art in the 1940s and by the end of the decade, his style shifted towards abstraction.Pasmore was awarded the CBE in 1959 and the following year he was selected for the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. In 1981, in recognition of his contribution to British art, he was made a Companion of Honour. In 1983 he was elected a Royal Academician. Pasmore died in Malta in 1998.
