The foreground of this painting shows a busy wharf, where boats are being loaded with people and produce. The wharf is bustling with activity, as people from all walks of life board a variety of boats to cross the river. This area is now the site of Victoria Tower Gardens on the Thames Embankment, a triangular garden on the bank of the Thames, between the Houses of Parliament and Lambeth Bridge. Across the River Thames we see Lambeth Palace, the official residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The horseferry can just be made out, transporting a coach and horses by raft, to the right of the composition.
